One of the most frustrating signs of facial aging is the development of fat under the chin, or the so-called “double chin”. For many people, regardless of diet and exercise, this fullness is very difficult to eliminate. Up until recently, the primary solutions were surgical in nature. At Been Facial Plastics, we offer a non-surgical alternative called Kybella to address mild-to-moderate submental fat accumulation.
Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) is an FDA-approved injection designed to reduce fat under the chin. A series of injections are performed under the chin, and the fat cells are broken down as a result. The fatty breakdown products are absorbed by the body, which means those fat cells are permanently removed.
Is Kybella® Right for You?
Kybella® is safe for both men and women. Better results are seen in individuals who have taut skin in the neck area. People who have active infections, bleeding abnormalities or swallowing difficulties may require further evaluation before treatment is approved.
The best candidates for Kybella® possess the following characteristics:
- Mild-to-moderate fat accumulation under the chin
- Good skin elasticity in the neck
- Good healing properties
What Sets Dr. Mark Been Apart?
In order to perform Kybella® injections, one must first have an appreciation of the relevant anatomy to prevent complications. As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Been is an expert in the anatomy and function of the neck and has a detailed understanding of the pertinent aesthetic goals. Dr. Been is trained in the proper techniques for Kybella® injection, and at the time of your consultation, he will perform a complete facial analysis to decide if you are an appropriate candidate.
What to Expect after your Kybella treatment
Following the injections, some patients describe a tingling or light burning sensation. Swelling and mild bruising may also result. Icing the area is particularly soothing after this procedure. To further reduce the risk of bruising, we request you do not take any blood-thinning products (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil) one week before the procedure. Afterwards, you can wear makeup immediately to cover the area. The effects of Kybella® will manifest over the days and weeks following treatment. To achieve desired results, more than one series of injections may be necessary.
